MEWP Operator Training Record Tool

OSHA (29 CFR 1926.453 and 1910.67) requires that only trained persons operate aerial lifts, and the ANSI/SAIA A92.24 standard OSHA points to spells out the record: who was trained, on which MEWP classification, by whom and when, plus a familiarization record naming the specific make and model and the person who gave it. Frequently asked questions

Does OSHA require a MEWP training record?

OSHA requires that only trained persons operate aerial lifts (1926.453(a)(2) by reference to ANSI A92.2, and 1910.67(c)(2)(ii)) and expects the employer to be able to show it. The specific record contents come from ANSI/SAIA A92.24, the consensus standard OSHA inspectors and insurers use as the benchmark. Keeping this record is how you show the training happened.

What is familiarization and why is it on the record?

Under A92.22 and A92.24, general training covers the MEWP group and type; familiarization is the model-specific walkthrough (manuals on board, controls, features, limits) an operator gets before using a machine they have not run before. It is recorded separately and must be repeated for each new model, so the record names the make and model.

How often is MEWP training renewed?

A92.24 does not set a fixed number of years. It requires retraining when the training validity period the provider set expires, after an extended period without operating, when new or significantly different MEWP technology is introduced, or after an accident or near miss, and it requires a qualified person to evaluate operators on a regular basis. Shield issues MEWP certificates for 3 years, which is the common industry period.

Does a scissor lift card cover a boom lift?

No. Group A (scissor) and Group B (boom) are different classifications; training and the record should name every group and type the operator is authorized on, plus familiarization on each model.
