Can You Fail the Forklift Certification Exam? Not for Long

At Shield Certificates the final exam has unlimited free retakes with an explanation for every question, so a wrong answer is a lesson, not a lost fee. How the exam works, what trips people up, and what the hands-on evaluation looks like.

You can miss questions on a forklift certification exam, but at Shield Certificates you cannot get stuck: the final exam is 10 questions, 80% passes, and you can retake it as many times as you need at no charge, with the explanation for every question shown after each attempt and the relevant chapter one tap away. Nothing is recorded until you pass, and the certificate is issued the moment you do. Most people pass on the first or second try.

How the Shield Exam Works

  • 10 questions per attempt, drawn from a bank of 35, so each retake is a fresh test rather than the same one memorized.
  • 80% to pass: 8 of 10. Two wrong is still a pass.
  • Unlimited retakes, no extra charge, no waiting period. Go back into any chapter first if you want.
  • After every attempt you see which questions you missed, why the right answer is right, and a link to the chapter that covers it.
  • Only the passing attempt counts. Your certificate and wallet card show the completion, not the number of tries.

Providers differ here. Some cap retakes, some charge for them, and some cannot be failed at all, which tells an employer nothing. Shield’s exam is a real check with a built-in second chance.

What People Miss Most

Load center and capacity (the data plate number applies only at the listed load center), the stability triangle, and what to do if the truck starts to tip: stay in the seat, hold the wheel, brace your feet and lean away from the fall, never jump. Those three chapters are worth a second read before the exam; they are also the three that keep people alive.

The Hands-On Evaluation

After the course, your employer’s designated person watches you inspect, drive, handle a load and park on the truck you will use. If something is unsafe, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(4)(ii) calls for refresher training and another evaluation; you simply do not operate until you pass. Shield’s printable checklist (a general template the employer adapts to its site) shows you in advance exactly what the evaluator is watching for, so there are no surprises.

Does a Fail Go on Any Record?

A missed online attempt is not reported to anyone, including your employer; they see the completion. A hands-on evaluation that needs a redo is simply retrained and re-evaluated, and the passing date is the one that goes in the certification record.
