How Long Does Online Forklift Certification Take?

About an hour for the online course, 15 to 30 minutes on the truck for the employer’s evaluation, and no required wait between them. What takes the time, and what to budget for a crew.

Online forklift certification takes about one to two and a half hours for the course, depending on the provider, plus 15 to 30 minutes on the truck for the hands-on evaluation your employer runs. Shield Certificates’ course takes 50–70 minutes; 360training lists about 2.5 hours, Hard Hat Training 2–2.5 hours and OSHA.com about 1 hour. There is no required gap between the course and the evaluation, so an operator can be certified the same day they start if the employer schedules it that way; the only rule is no unsupervised operation until the evaluation is done.

Why Courses Differ So Much

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(3) lists the topics formal instruction must cover; it does not set a minimum number of hours. A course that lists 2.5 hours is usually padded with video or page timers, not more required content. Shield’s course is written to be read on a phone, and it moves at the operator’s pace.

Does the Certificate Take Time to Arrive?

No. At Shield the PDF and the phone wallet card are available the moment the exam is passed, and the employer sees the completion in the dashboard. Providers that mail a plastic card typically take a week or more for the card, though the certificate is usually immediate.

Budgeting for a Crew

For ten operators, plan on about an hour of each operator’s time, spread across a slow afternoon or two, and one evaluator for an afternoon: ten evaluations at 15–30 minutes each is three to five hours on the truck. The evaluation is the step that actually takes planning; the online part takes care of itself.

How Often You Do It Again

An evaluation at least every three years (1910.178(l)(4)(iii)), and refresher training sooner after an accident, near-miss, unsafe operation, a different type of truck or a change in workplace conditions. The refresher is usually shorter than the first course because the operator already has the experience.
