Can You Get Forklift Certified Entirely Online?
No. The classroom part can be done online; OSHA still requires a hands-on evaluation on the actual truck by someone your employer designates. What online covers, what it cannot, and how to finish the rest in an afternoon.
No. You can complete the classroom part of forklift certification entirely online, and that is most of the time and all of the test. But OSHA requires a hands-on evaluation on the actual truck, in the actual workplace, by someone your employer designates, before you are certified to operate. Any website that says you can be fully certified without ever touching a forklift is leaving that part out. Here is what online covers, what it cannot, and how to get the rest done in an afternoon.
What the Rule Says
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(1) requires the employer to ensure each operator is competent, as shown by successful completion of training and evaluation. Paragraph (l)(2) spells out three components: formal instruction (lecture, video, written material or an online course), practical training (demonstrations and exercises the operator performs), and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace. Paragraph (l)(6) says the employer certifies all of it in writing: the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date and the evaluator’s name.
What an Online Course Does Cover
- The formal instruction: how a forklift works, stability and load capacity, pre-shift inspection, pedestrian safety, refuelling or charging, and the hazards specific to the type of truck.
- The written test. Pass it and you have a certificate that documents the formal instruction.
- At Shield Certificates: 8 chapters, 50–70 minutes on a phone, English or Spanish, certificate and wallet card the moment you pass. Chapter 1 is free to preview with no account.

What It Cannot Cover
- Driving the truck. The practical training and the evaluation have to happen on a forklift, with loads, in the aisles and on the ramps you will actually use.
- Who evaluates. OSHA says a person with the knowledge, training and experience to train operators and judge their competence. In most small companies that is a supervisor or senior operator; it does not have to be an outside trainer.
- Site-specific hazards: your dock, your racking, your floor conditions. No course knows them.
How Long the Hands-On Part Takes
For an operator who has already done the online course, a typical evaluation is 20 to 40 minutes: inspection, travel with and without a load, stacking and unstacking at height, parking. Shield provides a printable evaluation checklist that follows 1910.178; the evaluator signs it, and the result, date and evaluator’s name are recorded on the certificate so the employer’s written record is complete. The checklist is a general template; OSHA does not require a particular form, so adapt it to the trucks and conditions at your site or substitute your own.

If You Are a Worker Paying for Your Own Course
The online certificate shows a new employer you have done the formal instruction. They still have to evaluate you on their equipment before you operate, and most will, usually in your first days. Having the instruction done saves them time and is a genuine advantage when applying.
If You Are an Employer
Buy the online course for each operator, run the evaluation yourself with the checklist, keep the signed record. Re-evaluate at least every three years, and sooner after an accident, a near miss, unsafe operation, or a change of truck type or workplace conditions. Shield’s employer dashboard holds the certificates and evaluation records for every operator and prints a compliance report.
Short Answers to the Questions People Ask
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is an online forklift certificate valid? | Yes, as documentation of the formal instruction. It is not the whole certification until the employer’s evaluation is done. |
| Does OSHA approve online forklift courses? | OSHA does not approve or certify forklift training providers at all. Courses are written to the standard; no one is “OSHA-approved.” |
| How long is forklift certification good for? | Evaluation at least every 3 years, sooner if triggered by an incident or a change. |
| Can I be certified with no employer? | You can hold the training certificate. Certification is employer-specific because the evaluation is in the workplace. |
| Is there a government forklift license? | No. There is no federal forklift license; certification is the employer’s written record under 1910.178(l). |
