Best Online Forklift Certification for Small Employers (2026)
For a shop, warehouse or yard with 2–50 operators and no safety department: what OSHA requires of you, what to look for in an online course, and how Shield, 360training, Hard Hat Training and OSHA.com compare.
If you run a shop, warehouse or yard with two to fifty forklift operators and no safety department, the best online forklift certification is the one that gets every operator through the formal instruction quickly, in the language they speak, and leaves you with the records OSHA asks to see. This guide compares the main online options on those terms, with prices from each provider’s website on October 22, 2026, and explains the part no online course can do for you.
What OSHA Actually Requires of You
Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l), you, the employer, must make sure each operator gets formal instruction, practical training on your trucks, and an evaluation of their driving in your workplace, then certify in writing that it was done, with the operator’s name, the training date, the evaluation date and the evaluator’s name. Re-evaluation is due at least every three years. An online course covers the formal instruction. Everything else happens on your equipment, with someone you designate who has the knowledge, training and experience to evaluate.
What to Look For, in Order
- The evaluation paperwork. The course should give you a checklist for the hands-on evaluation and a place to record who did it and when. Without that you are building the OSHA record yourself.
- One purchase, both languages. Separate English and Spanish courses double the admin and often the cost.
- A dashboard. You need to see who has finished, who has not started, and when each certificate expires, without a spreadsheet.
- Time per operator. An hour on a phone during a slow afternoon gets done. A three-hour course gets put off.
- Volume pricing you actually reach. Discounts that start at 20 seats do nothing for a crew of eight.

Best Overall for a Small Employer: Shield Certificates
It is the lowest price at every crew size, the only option where one purchase covers both languages, and the only one that puts the supervisor’s evaluation on the certificate itself. The free dashboard is the piece most small employers are missing: it holds the training date, evaluation date and evaluator name OSHA wants, for every operator, in one place. The honest caveat is that it is new, launched in 2026, with no public review history yet.
Best If Your Crew Already Knows a Brand: 360training
Twenty-five years and a million cards mean nobody will question the name. You will pay about a third more per operator and the course takes two to three times as long.
Best for a Very Small Crew That Wants a Traditional Wallet Card: Hard Hat Training
Its volume discount starts at four seats, it provides a downloadable evaluation form, and it is explicit that your own designated person does the evaluation. Price and course length are in line with 360training.
On OSHA.com
A private company despite the name; its Outreach courses come from 360training. The forklift course is described as 100% online, which is accurate for the instruction but says nothing about the evaluation you still have to run. Fine for a single operator who understands that; less helpful for an employer building a compliance file.
What This Will Cost You for a Crew of Ten
Shield: $470 for the courses, about an hour of each operator’s time, and an afternoon for your evaluator to run ten checklists on your truck. The checklists and the record-keeping are included. Add the evaluator’s time at any provider; that part is yours regardless.
